On this sad day, I will be attending the funeral of Staff Sgt. Stephen L. Murphy, of Troy.

Representing the state and county not only as a state senator, but also as a mother, my heart aches for his parents and family. It is a testament to our community that the people of Troy comfort those closest to him and grieve together.

Stephen was a remarkable young man who served his country for more than 16 years putting the safety of our lives before his.

I am humbled to recognize this young man and to honor him as a Marine and a member of our community.
